Balgownie’s commitment to sustainability
At Balgownie Estate, sustainability is woven into every aspect of the guest experience, from our accommodation and dining operations to water conservation, energy efficiency and waste reduction. We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint through responsible resource management, innovative technologies and thoughtful day-to-day practices that help preserve the natural beauty of the Yarra Valley. Through continuous improvement and environmental stewardship, we aim to create memorable experiences while caring for our region for future generations.
Sustainable Wine Production
In 2025, Balgownie Estate partnered with Wine by Sam, an independent wine production facility based in Seymour, Victoria, to produce our wines.
Wine by Sam is a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia and has been recognised for its environmental leadership, receiving the 2026 ICCWS Excellence in Environmental Sustainability Award. Their commitment to renewable energy, including a 204kW solar system capable of generating more electricity than the winery consumes annually, alongside initiatives such as lightweight glass packaging, EV charging facilities and energy-efficient winemaking practices, aligns closely with Balgownie Estate’s values and sustainability goals.
Reducing Waste Through Smarter Operations
Across the estate, we are continuously reducing unnecessary waste and paper consumption through digital solutions and more efficient processes.
From paperless onboarding, payroll and HR systems to digital event orders, electronic welcome signage and online guest feedback surveys, much of our operation has transitioned to digital-first platforms. We also prioritise local suppliers where possible and encourage shared transportation options for private events and functions, helping reduce transport-related emissions.
Responsible Dining
At Restaurant 1309, sustainability begins with thoughtful sourcing and mindful operations.
Our menus celebrate seasonal ingredients and locally sourced produce, reducing food miles while supporting regional growers and producers. We actively minimise food waste through careful menu planning, reduce reliance on single-use plastics and prioritise suppliers with strong environmental credentials.
We have also transitioned from single-use coffee capsules to freshly ground coffee, preventing approximately 50,000 capsules and around 100kg of plastic waste from entering landfill each year. On-site herb cultivation and expanded recycling and composting initiatives further support our commitment to responsible dining.
Sustainable Stays
Our accommodation experiences are designed to help guests enjoy a comfortable stay while reducing environmental impact.
Through our Balgownie Green initiative, guests can choose reduced housekeeping services, helping conserve water, energy and resources. Since introducing this program, guests have helped save an estimated 193,200 litres of water and 34.35 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Across our guest rooms, refillable bathroom amenities help minimise single-use packaging, and environmentally responsible cleaning products from Cleaner Future are used throughout the property.
Additional sustainability initiatives include online pre-check-in, digital in-room compendiums, towel replacement upon request and coffee cups made using recycled coffee bean husks in partnership with Nespresso.
Water Conservation & Resource Management
Water is one of our most valuable resources, and we are committed to using it responsibly across the estate.
Our vineyards rely heavily on rainwater collected in dams and tanks throughout the property, significantly reducing reliance on external water supplies. Water-efficient fixtures, including AAA-rated toilet suites, tapware and low-flow devices, further minimise consumption.
Our onsite wastewater treatment systems also capture, treat and repurpose wastewater, saving more than 7 million litres of water annually and providing irrigation for our vineyards and gardens.
Renewable Energy & Recycling
Balgownie Estate continues to invest in renewable energy and waste reduction initiatives that support a more sustainable future.
Home to the largest solar system of any property in the Yarra Valley, Balgownie Estate has over 200kW of solar power contributing to the estate’s energy needs. This significant investment in renewable energy helps reduce our reliance on traditional energy sources while supporting our goal of becoming as self-sufficient as possible.
Guest rooms are also equipped with power-saving systems that automatically deactivate lighting and air conditioning when rooms are unoccupied, helping to minimise unnecessary energy consumption. Across the estate, we recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminium, glass, green waste and cooking oil wherever possible.
Recent initiatives include our partnership with Bottle Cycler to crush and recycle glass, sustainable takeaway packaging, and recycling programs for used coffee pods.
